Only the Strong Survive

4:0… This is the record all teams strive for as we concluded the fourth week of play of Austin SSC’s indoor volleyball season. However, now only one Social Division and one Super Social Division team has that sought after record.

The battle to remain perfect took place in the second game of the night for both divisions. In Super Social, our remaining undefeated team, Sets on the Beach, took on second to last seed, Overserved. Though Overserved has some strong individuals, they have not fully jelled as a team yet which has let them down so far this season. Sets on the Beach easily won this week in straight sets. Their strong defense and excellent serving carried them to this victory as it has been their main weapons all season. Let’s see if Sets on the Beach can keep up the strong play next week as they take on One Hit Wonders.

The Social division’s game for top seed took place between Bumpin Uglies and wRECking crew. wRECking crew started out the first game at a slight disadvantage because they only had 5 players. Despite that challenge, wRECking crew came out strong. As usual, they relied on their strong middle hitting to propel them to the lead. However, Bumpin Uglies was definitely not going to give up. With a late game surge because of some strong hitting from their male players, they were able to take game 1. With their first lost game of the season, wRECking crew was obviously not going to go away that easily. A late arrival of their sixth player mixed with a mental laps from some of the Bumpin Uglies players allowed wRECking crew to come storming back and snatch game 2. However, game 3 was a different story. wRECking Crew got stuck in a bad rotation which ultimately led to their downfall. The combination of their strongest middle hitter in the back row and some excellent serving by Bumpin Uglies was too much for wRECking crew to handle. As the most competitive and well played game of the season, it will be very interesting to see a rematch of these two teams during the playoffs. If wRECking crew has all of their players, things might end differently.

Happy no longer is lasting an hour as teams can hit up Docs after the game for some great deals on Miller Lite, MGD 64, and UV Vodka. Win or lose, a $2 Miller Lite is a great way to end the week.
